The Clerk’s Well & the River of Wells: explore the valley of the River Fleet.

Our walk through Clerkenwell begins in an area Charles Dickens knew very well, and used as the setting for Oliver Twist. Further on in the fringes of Old Islington there are some charming residential squares from 1830, built as Dickens’ first works were being published. Come along to hear about the father of all clowns, the purpose of the largest cheque ever written (up to 1888) and discover how a spark struck from Clerkenwell lit a fire in Russia.
