Guided London Walks

Thames Path 10.5: follow the riverside from Bermondsey to Rotherhithe.
This walk takes us along Bermondsey’s riverside, close to the village with the Saxon name Beormund’s Island. Today there are some splendid late 19th century warehouses, but in the early the riverside this was a maze of marshy islands drained by small streams, where London’s poorest inhabitants lived from by petty thievery. Charles Dickens made this Bill Sykes’ hideout and the scene for his final retribution, with; “rooms so small, so filthy, so confined, that the air would seem to be too tainted even for the dirt and squalor which they shelter; wooden chambers thrusting themselves out above the mud and threatening to fall into it - as some have done.”
