Guided London Walks

Eastern Lanes & Byways of the City: explore historic trading markets.
This walk will be in the City of London, beginning at the Monument, near where the disastrous fire began in September 1666. Hear how resolute recovery afterwards meant the City was rebuilt better than it had been before. In this part of the City narrow lanes and alleys have survived remarkably, despite later redevelopments, including some fine 17th century churches built during recovery from after the fire. Among the survivals from ancient times the Customs House maintains the same use since the 14th century, although other old markets and warehouses nearby have adapted to new ones. The buildings here include some of the most modern in the City, but we will discover ancient remains as well.
