 Guided London Walks

CityLondonGuideBadge

Wildwoods & Railway Children: walk through ancient woodlands at Oxleas.

For this walk we begin in Ancient Woodland, taking a path through a rare survival of centuries-old deciduous forest that has endured despite being in the midst of London suburban houses. From these woods there are splendid views over the downs, while hidden away among the trees is a splendid 18th century folly that was built to commemorate the capture and destruction of a pirate fortress.  After leaving the woods we shall see an estate of houses urgently built in 1915 for munitions workers at Woolwich and we finish in the gardens on the site of a mediaeval manor house. Along the way there are stories of Zeppelins, an apiary and the first modern writer for children.
