 Guided London Walks

From Highgate Village to Kenwood House: should you kiss the maid or the mistress?

Highgate village is on the ancient route of the Great North Road, where coach horses had to be rested after a pull up the steep hill. During the wait, passengers could obtain the Freedom of Highgate by ‘Swearing on the Horns’. Highgate residents included poets Andrew Marvell, Samuel Taylor Coleridge and John Betjeman, as well as philanthropists Angela Burdett-Coutts and Sir Sydney Waterlow. There are fine old houses here as well as an innovative modernist block of flats where Emma Peel ‘lived’ in The Avengers.
